Portland International AutoShow

Don't get your hopes up: It wasn't Detroit. There was nothing new, nothing that hadn't been seen before.  There were some cool things, although many other awesome things weren't there.
My main problem with this auto show is that what it boils down to is a four-day auto mall. Everybody is selling everything they've got, and while there are some items that are just for show, most of it is there to help the myriad retailers turn a profit. For that reason, there were tons of Japanese saloons and American pick-up trucks that take up so much space and are all so boring. Every Acura, whilst having not repulsive styling, looks just like the last Acura.
And the coolest cars I saw, like the new SRT Viper and Ford Fusion Energi, were held up on pedestals or surrounded by rope, preventing any passerby from getting a look inside the car.
Other than that, this was by far the best auto show I've ever been to.  A pair of Rolls Royces, of Bentleys and of Lamborghinis lined one walk way outside the convention rooms, and some cool cars that aren't available yet also showed up, which included the Chevrolet Spark, an EV coming to California and Oregon); and the Lincoln MKZ, which is a yacht made for the streets.
If you feel anything for cars, auto shows are always fun. If you're in the market for a new car, then they can be informative. And even you aren't particularly into cars, if you have an interest in technology, manufacturers are always touting their achievements and their latest technology. The Smart Cars advertised themselves, for example, with a picture of massive expedition van perched and held atop the chassis of a Smart. That takes engineering skills.
