Port Town of Harwich

Today I have visited the small port town of Harwich (Ha-rich the 'w' is silent).  It is a really tiny town, and it sits across the bay from a MASSIVE port.  I saw a couple giant shipping boats, a MAERSK and a COSCO boat, and they were huge.  The letters written on them were, in their own right, big enough to be clearly read from what must have been at least a mile or two away (imagine a couple of kilometers or so, for those who use metric over imperial).

I had lunch at a hotel called 'The Pier Hotel."  This was right across the road from the ha'penny pier.  This name (ha'penny pier) comes from the phrase "half-penny," the price it used to cost to enter the pier.  Of course today half a penny is nothing, so they just let you keep it, but who wants to go out onto the flimsy wood walkway over a few tons of water?  Well, I did anyway.  I admit, I do enjoy the sea... the idea of drowning in it, not so much!

These are a couple of other interesting things I wanted to share with you.  First, the "Electric Palace," which just so happens to be the oldest functioning movie theater in all England.  We couldn't go inside, but the outside looks pretty cool.  And then there are some real good value food carts in the picture below.
